Acanthus leaves was a complexly dense and subtly shaded wallpaper which
required 30 printing blocks and 15 colours,
causing each roll to cost 16 shillings - rather expensive in 1875.
The original watercolour design is in the Victoria & Albert Museum,

|
The
Acanthus plant is found in the decoration of many ancient cultures.
William Morris used it extensively.
The original silk wall-hanging which inspired these kits is now at the
Victoria & Albert Museum, London
and was designed by Morris in about 1880. |

This wall
hanging was designed by William Morris so that he might teach himself to
weave.
He worked on it every morning from 10th May to 17th September 1879. It
took a total of 516 hours.
The original is now in Kelmscott Manor where it was made. |
