ETHKNITS ABOUT US We have been established
for over 12 years. People often describe us as an Aladdin's cave. Despite
the comparative smallness of the shop we try and stock everything and that which
we do not have in stock we will try and get if we possibly can. In Maldon it is a long
tradition that on the first two Thursdays in December the town holds a Victorian
Shopping Evening. Most of the shop keepers dress in Victorian costume and there
is always lots going on in the streets of the town. There are children's and adults
bands and choirs performing at different parts of the high street plus open air
market stalls selling lanterns, sweets, hotdogs, roast chestnuts etc. The only
fly in the ointment is that it is usually very cold or wet or both on Victoria
evenings and because we are in an arcade we don't get to see much ourselves. Here we are last
year - just to prove that we do dress up. From left to
right Kathy, Lynn T, Karen and Lynn G. We have decided that the costumes make us
all look a lot fatter than we really are - especially me (Kathy). I am the owner
of the shop but I used to be a legal secretary in London. I have
always been mad about knitting and sewing since my Gran taught me to crochet and
my Mum taught me to knit. My Gran also
used to let me loose on her hand operated Singer sewing machine which I still
have and will pass on as a family heirloom one day. She bought it whilst she was
in service in the early 1900s and paid 1/6 a week for it (about 7p today). She
always said it was worth it's weight in gold and it's very heavy. I started by
making doll's clothes on it and graduated to making clothes for myself. I taught
my daughters to sew with it and hope to teach my grand-daughter one day.
